실뜨기 정원

“실뜨기 놀이는 패턴을 주고받고, 실을 떨구고 실패하며 간간히 어떤 모양을 만들고 이전에는 없던 의미 있고 어쩌면 아름다운 무언가를 발견하는 것이며, 문제가 되는 것들을 연결하고 손 위에 손을, 손가락 위에 손가락을, 실이 닿은 부위에 다른 부위를 얹으며 이야기를 전달하여 땅과 대지위에서 유한한 번영의 조건을 만들어가는 것이다.”

건물에는 사람만이 아니라 식물도 살고 있다. 비어있던 옥상 한 편에는 돌콩과 쇠뜨기, 강아지풀과 망초가 무성하게 자라고 있었다. 야생콩인 돌콩은 척박한 땅에 누구보다 먼저 자리를 잡고 토양에 질소를 고정해 다른 식물이 자랄 수 있는 비옥한 흙을 만든다. 두 사람이 실로 형태를 만들어 주고받으며, 상대방이 내민 패턴에서 새로운 형태를 만드는 실뜨기 놀이처럼, 실뜨기 정원은 화단에 자연스럽게 자라난 잡초의 풍경을 이어받아 새로운 식물을 초대하여 정원을 만들어 나간다. 다시 씨앗이 떨어지고, 새로운 잡초도 자라며 정원의 실뜨기는 계속 이어진다.

Gardens of String Figures

Buildings serve not only as homes for people but also for plant life. In a forgotten rooftop corner, wild soybean, horsetail, horseweed, and foxtail have taken root. Wild soybeans, in particular, are frequently the first to colonize open, barren ground, enriching the soil by fixing nitrogen, thereby making way for other plants. Similar to the game of cat’s cradle, where players exchange strings to create intricate patterns based on the previous figure, the gardener takes the existing patterns of the spontaneous flora as the base. Over time, as seeds sprout and more weeds flourish, the play of string figures continues.
